This is lovely miniature boxwood carving of a lohan riding on a horse. It is possible that it was intended for use as a Chinese toggle – there are holes on the two ends –but we have tried to push a needle through from each end and it gets stuck about half way through – probably some old clogged dirt. The carving is quite detailed and the lohan’s face and the horse’s head are very realistic.

A deep Arita footed bowl with a scalloped edge dating from the late Meiji to early Taisho era - circa 1890-1920. The inner design is that of a wonderfully goofy looking tiger in a bamboo grove - his long tail curling up over his back.

The bowl measures 9" diameter at the top - 4" diameter at the foot and is 3 1/2" deep. The ...click for details

This is an extraordinary Japanese Komai dish with decoration of a tiger in mid stride as he stalks his prey. The metals are gold, silver, and copper with the gold shading from a coppery color to a yellow gold. The detailing is as fine as you will see. The nose is a reddish copper, claws are silver, silver used for shading on face and underneath on the throat and chest. It is signed on the back with Komai's mark. This piece measures 5 1/4” diameter and is 1 1/8” deep with tripod legs under th ...click for details

This is one of the most unusual items we have ever had in our collection – a tiny carved wood travel shrine. The Japanese have their travel shrines called zushi – most in enclosed cases – some even in ceramics. However, this is the first time we have ever seen a Chinese travel shrine.

The inner part of the piece has a hexagonal base on wh ...click for details

This is a wonderful Hirado porcelain netsuke in the form of a shi shi laying down with his mouth open. Every detail from the eyes and teeth to the curly hair on his back is beautifully executed as only the Hirado pottery artists could achieve. The piece is mold formed and the details were hand engraved. The bottom is unglazed and has the two holes that form the himotoshi for the connecting cord. The netsuke measures 1 ¾” long by 1 ¼” wide by 1 1/8” tall and is in excellent condition – no chips, ...click for details

This is a lovely celadon bowl with an impressed flower in the bottom of the bowl that appears to be an open lotus blossom. The edges of the bowl are lightly scalloped and give the bowl a nice soft appearance. The outside is not decorated other than the celadon glaze. The small raised foot is not glazed on the bottom.

This is a lovely orange/amber colored snuff bottle made of chalcedony. It is a nice size – measuring 2” high by 1 ¾” wide by 1 1/8” thick – not including the stopper, When held to the light there are some cloudy areas in the stone. The stopper is a white agate with streaks of rust orange and the spoon is made of bamboo. We believe it is possible that this could be the original stopper - there is a crack in the top piece. The bottle has a very well formed foot and is very well hollowed. We date ...click for details

This is a pottery brush rest for the scholars desk made in the shape of five mountain peaks with flowers in low relief on the surface. A brush rest refers to the object used to hold the brush when one temporarily stops painting or writing, so that the wet brush will not smear other things. The piece is in a semi- circular form to that it will stand solidly when the brushes are place on it. The rest is glazed with a glaze that is a mix of gray, white and light blue – the base is unglazed and has ...click for details

This is a framed print by Utagawa Kunihisa II (1832-1891) - a pupil and son-in-law of Utagawa Kuniyoshi. It portrays two women by a stream that flows by a garden fence. One of the women is kneeling and the other is bent over as if to look for something in the water. (I seem to recall some legend about a shogun’s palace floating cups on saucers down stream once a year for people to collect – but I cannot find any reference to that so I am probably just having a “senior moment”). This is a great Japanese Arita plate in Shonsui-style to help celebrate the new Year of the Tiger. On the front of the plate are the twelve animals that make up the Chinese New Year zodiac. The border has a band of enclosed florets between dark blue circles. All twelve animals are very well painted and are enclosed in separate reserves against a blue background.
