This lovely little melon shaped lobed Coupe was made during the Song Dynasty (AD 960 - 1279). It is glazed in a delicate pale blue Qingbai glaze and has two small loop handles. The piece measures 2 7/8” diameter at the waist and is 2 ½” high. It is in excellent condition – some glaze dripped inside the upper rim of the piece.

This is a late Edo to early Meiji bronze yatate with a cast turtle on the top of the bowl that holds the ink. The turtle sits on top of a large rock. The shaft of the yatate has an incised long floral decoration. The shaft also has two holes for holding a silk string to carry the yatate on a sash. The piece has a lovely old patina – the hinge works perfectly – and the inside of the ink box shows definite signs of usage. It measures 7 “ long – the ink box is 2” wide by 1 2/3” deep by 1 Ό” high. This is a very rare and fascinating old Japanese coin purse with a large mixed metal (Shakudo) medallion on the front. The medallion shows a shogun or priest with a young attendant at his side. They are located next to a flowering bush and a full moon or sun shines overhead. At the base of the oval medallion is a handle with small ropes. The piece has a very light creamy color to the glaze - not the normal very white associated with earlier blanc de chine pieces. A Chinese blue and white scalloped edge dish with a design in underglaze cobalt blue of two four clawed dragons on opposing sides of the rim. They are separated by white clouds and the center is almost a yin/yang design. The dish measures 6 3/4" diameter by 1" deep. There is a mark on the inside of the footed base - not translated.

This is a charming small globular shaped water coupe with a white rim. The rest of the exterior is glazed in the dark reddish maroon color known as oxblood flambι. There are five finely impressed vertical lines that have a slightly darker color where the glaze pooled and which gives a segmented appearance to the piece. This fine early Japanese cloisonne round covered box (kogo) is 3" wide and 2" high. It has a lovely design of flowers and butterflies.It is in excellent condition - exterior is fine, all the gilding around the rim has worn off leaving only the copper. The rim on the bottom half has many small bends and there is a chip to the inside of the lid as shown. No mark. I date this one from the early Meiji period circa 1870's. This fine square tray is made from a rare white lacquer made form crushed quail egg shells. The egg shells are crushed then applied to a top layer of dark black lacquer to dry. Afterward, the design is made on top of the crushed egg shell – in this case, it is of makie gold lacquer and is of multiple irises. The base lacquer is shiny dark black lacquer, known as roiro. This is a smallish Chinese bronze “GU” form – with totally plain simple design. The piece measures 4 Ύ” high and is 4” diameter at the top. It is in very good shape – fine patina – one ½” crack in the bottom rim. We date the piece to the late Qing dynasty, circa 1850-1880s.
