This is lovely miniature boxwood carving of a lohan riding on a horse. It is possible that it was intended for use as a Chinese toggle – there are holes on the two ends –but we have tried to push a needle through from each end and it gets stuck about half way through – probably some old clogged dirt. The carving is quite detailed and the lohan’s face and the horse’s head are very realistic.

This is one of the most unusual items we have ever had in our collection – a tiny carved wood travel shrine. The Japanese have their travel shrines called zushi – most in enclosed cases – some even in ceramics. However, this is the first time we have ever seen a Chinese travel shrine.

The inner part of the piece has a hexagonal base on wh ...click for details

This is a lovely celadon bowl with an impressed flower in the bottom of the bowl that appears to be an open lotus blossom. The edges of the bowl are lightly scalloped and give the bowl a nice soft appearance. The outside is not decorated other than the celadon glaze. The small raised foot is not glazed on the bottom.

We think there is a v ...click for details

This is a lovely orange/amber colored snuff bottle made of chalcedony. It is a nice size – measuring 2” high by 1 Ύ” wide by 1 1/8” thick – not including the stopper, When held to the light there are some cloudy areas in the stone. The stopper is a white agate with streaks of rust orange and the spoon is made of bamboo. We believe it is possible that this could be the original stopper - there is a crack in the top piece. The bottle has a very well formed foot and is very well hollowed. We date ...click for details

This is a pottery brush rest for the scholars desk made in the shape of five mountain peaks with flowers in low relief on the surface. A brush rest refers to the object used to hold the brush when one temporarily stops painting or writing, so that the wet brush will not smear other things. The piece is in a semi- circular form to that it will stand solidly when the brushes are place on it. The rest is glazed with a glaze that is a mix of gray, white and light blue – the base is unglazed and has ...click for details

The small squat round pot measures 2 ½” diameter and is 1 Ό” high. The piece is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. We believe it dates from the late Qing period, circa 1875-1910.

One of the most rare forms of Chinese snuff bottles are those made of organic materials - except for ivory. Among the other organic materials used, one of the most rare is bamboo. Because of is fragility when carved it is very difficult to carve without splitting the bamboo. Here we have a superb example of a bamboo snuff bottle in excellent condition. We have many books on the great snuff bottle collections in the world and have only found 2-3 bamboo bottles out of thousands of bottles. ...click for details

This is a beautiful Chinese vase made sometime after the late 17th century, Qing Dynasty. The shape is tall and faceted with a striking presence. The blue glaze is a Mazarin blue - a deep blue color, named in honor of Cardinal Mazarin, prime minister of France, 1643-1661. It is similar to a cobalt blue but still has its own distinctive color.

This is a fine Ming dynasty celadon deep dish with a well executed impressed design of a small boy with flowers. The celadon is a particularly pretty blue/green color. We date it to the mid to late Ming dynasty, circa 1450s – 1500s. The piece measures 4 3/8” diameter and is 2 Ύ” deep. It is in very good condition with one small chip on the rim – see photo – and normal usage light scratches in the bottom of the bowl. One tiny firing bubble of brown grit in the interior.
