Here we present a lovely pair of Blanc de Chine wine cups dating from the late 17th to the mid 18th century. Wine cups are lightly flared lotus cups with eight lobes, sitting on a ring or miniature feet. They are extremely delicate. They are often decorated with molded or incised decorations.

This is a fine Blanc de Chine libation cup in a shape based upon Chinese libation cups made of rhinoceros horn. The outside of the piece has a molded relief figure of a dragon encircling the entire piece – he is seen chasing the sacred pearl. Under the dragon we find a small tiger looking upwards. The ends of the cup have a series of three draped folds.

This miniature figure of a Qilin measures 2 ¾” long by 2” high to the tip of his horn by 1 1/8” wide. He is shown lying down with his head turned upwards, his tail resting on his left leg and the single horn protruding from the top of his head. The piece is in excellent condition. This beautifully molded blanc de chine figure shows an acolyte of the God of Longevity. He is seen holding a sacred peach in his right hand and is often seen in pictures accompanying his master/teacher. In Chinese mythology, Peaches of Immortality are consumed by the immortals due to its mystic virtue of conferring longevity on all who ate them. It appears in a number of fables and paintings.

This is a lovely little blanc de chine figure of a boy standing with his right harm held to his chest. The figure measures 2 ¾” high by 1” wide by 7/8” deep and is in excellent condition. The boy has a top knot typical of the young boys of that period and a very quietly smiling face. We date the piece to the Qing dynasty, circa 1820s – 1870s. The thickness of the figure could indicate and even earlier date.

This is a lovely small libation cup standing on tripod flared legs. It has two posts in the middle of the top of the cup and a handle on one side. There are four low relief reserves around the sides – each separated by a dotted vertical line. The top of the cup is an oval with pinched sides and a small pouring lip at one end. This is a classic Blanc de chine figure of a Temple Lion – also known as the Dog of Fo. The piece measures 6” high by 3” wide by 2 1/8” and has a joss stick tube holder on its side. It is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks – just the usual small firing flaws. We date the piece to the middle 18th to very early 19th century. This is a small but pretty little blanc de chine Foo Dog is shown sitting on a rectangular platform. It measures 2 ¼” high by 1 5/8” wide by 1 ½” thick and is in excellent condition. Hard to date – the original owner dated it to the Ming dynasty – we will be much more conservative and date it to the late Qing dynasty. The small firing flaws on the inside could indicate the earlier date – but with so many reproduction ceramics flowing out of China, we will go with the later date. ...click for details
