This interesting and rare unglazed pottery animal is believed to date to the Chinese Warring States period.(see footnote**). It is hand molded in the shape of a somewhat splay footed animal standing on all four legs. It is impossible to tell whether it was made to represent a real animal such as a bear – or is a mythical representation of some creature. The piece measures 7 ¼” long – stands 4 1/8” high – and is 2 ½” wide. It is in excellent condition with no cracks or chips. It could easily be ...click for details

This is a rare piece of Yixing ware in that at least 90% of all Yixing items were made as teapots. This is a round covered box with an interior divider that divides the interior into a Yin-Yang design in the bottom half and a group of equal size compartments in the upper part of the box. We can only assume that is was made to be used with the two parts separated and then the total of eight compartments would have been used to contain various foods and condiments. ...click for details

This fine vase has the fine small crackle glaze that dates back to the Song dynasty. It is covered all over with tiny crackle finish in a light grey color. Just under the rim there is a light pool of faint celadon colored glaze. The vase was clearly made in two pieces – a top and a bottom half and then luted together at the waist. You can see the ridge where the two halves were joined – and you can feel the joint with your fingers inside the vase. ...click for details

This is an interestingly configured Qingbai Jar with two small fish shaped handles on the upper part of the jar. The glaze is that lovely soft blue color that distinguishes Qingbai ceramics. The top of the jar is slightly bulbous – then it tapers down to a narrower neck with two relief bands and the two fish handles – then it widens again before tapering down toward the bottom that is flare shape. The jar measures 5 ¼”” high by 21/2 ” diameter at the waist. It in excellent condition with no chi ...click for details

This is a Ming style pottery figure of a male court attendant that would have been buried with the deceased to serve him in the afterlife. The attendant stands on an unglazed hexagon base with his right hand clasped to his chest. He wears a tall red hat, and the clothing is painted in red, green and beige glazes. This figure is one of the rare types in which the head is molded and painted separately and is inserted into the body with a long tapered extension into the body of the figure. ...click for details

This is a country folk pottery octagonal bowl with a hairline that has been repaired by staples. Rivets on porcelain (or metal clamp repair as it was once known) has its origins in China. Staples were a common — and obvious — means of repairing damaged ceramics in the 19th century. The octagonal bowl has a glossy light turquoise glaze in the interior. The decorative interest is on the sides.

A lovely little tulip shaped pottery cup with a lemon yellow crackle glaze. We are not positive whether this cup is Chinese or Japanese - however that shade of yellow has tipped us towards Chinese in origin and to the late Qing dynasty in age - circa 1875-1910. It could possibly be quite a bit older.

There are nine impressed vertical line ...click for details

Here we offer a charming little Cizhou two piece incense holder/burner in the shape of a Mandarin Duck. As is the norm for this type of early Chinese pottery, the body of the duck is a tan glaze over the clay with iron brown highlights to distinguish various aspects of the duck – his tail, his wings, the eyes and the feathers at the top of the head. The piece measures 3” long by 1 ¾” high by 1 ½” wide. It is in excellent condition – remnants of burnt incense in the lower part of the body as exp ...click for details

A globular jarlet made in underglaze blue and white - dating from the late Ming to early Qing dynasties, circa 1625-1750. On two of the sides there are larger flowers enclosed in a circular blue line - the other two signs have loosely drawn vines connecting the floral reserves. At the top of the piece is a ring of rounded lappets encircling the upper shoulder. The base is basically unglazed although there are patches of a white wash. The piece has a crackle finish and a matte finish as opposed t ...click for details
