This is a lovely little round or paste or cosmetic box that has been made of very thin strips of a wood or vegetable material and tightly woven to form the box and the lid. We think the material is a probably thin bamboo strip – but it could be made of some raffia or reed type plant. The box measures 2 5/8” diameter and is 1 Ό” high to the top of the slightly domed lid.

A very finely carved bamboo wrist rest as used in the scholar's studio to protect the item he is painting from having the ink smear. The design on this piece is a fascinating picture of Kwanyin riding on the back of a fierce fire breathing animal - possibly a shi shi (although they are usually shown as more benign). The design is all hand carved.

We will be the first to point out that this offering is not Chinese - however, we do feel that it fits within the broad definition because of the shape of this scholar stone.

This is a medium dark green California jade found by a prospector over 150 years ago and handed down through the finder’s family. It is roughly shaped in the form of a ...click for details

A Chinese blue pottery brush rest made in the form of the character for the word mountain. These brush rests were used on the scholars desk to place his brushes whilst working on calligraphy or paintings. The form is also similar to the French Fleur de Lis figure. There are three peaks to the mountain and there are two identical Chinese characters on the two sides of the piece – we have not been able to translate them.
