SOLD - $495.00

This is an intricately carved bamboo brush pot for the scholars’ desk. It has a design of three elders seated at a low table – two playing the game and a third looking on. Next to them are two standing women seemingly engaged in their own conversation. The people are in what appears to be a grotto with stalactites and directly overhead is a large evergreen tree overspreading the group. The back of the piece is not carved. ...click for details

A very finely carved bamboo wrist rest as used in the scholar's studio to protect the item he is painting from having the ink smear. The design on this piece is a fascinating picture of Kwanyin riding on the back of a fierce fire breathing animal - possibly a shi shi (although they are usually shown as more benign). The design is all hand carved.

$495.00

This is somewhat comical Chinese ceramic brush rest made in the shape of three squirrels perched on some branches or vines and staring out at the world. The glaze is a very thick white glaze that ends just short of the base of the rest and the base is unglazed. The amusing feature of the brush rest is the inset brownish gold eyes with black pupils giving them quizzical look. The brush rest measures 4” wide by 2” high at the highest point by 1” deep and is made in a curved form. It is in fine con ...click for details

A Chinese blue pottery brush rest made in the form of the character for the word mountain. These brush rests were used on the scholars desk to place his brushes whilst working on calligraphy or paintings. The form is also similar to the French Fleur de Lis figure. There are three peaks to the mountain and there are two identical Chinese characters on the two sides of the piece – we have not been able to translate them.

A Chinese viewing stone for the scholars desk. This one is made of pure quartzite and resembles a group of ice boulders piled up – perhaps like the end of a glacier. The stone measures 6” wide by 4 ½” high by 3 Ύ” deep and is mounted on a nicely fitted wooden stand with legs. We believe this one dates from the late 19th to early 20th century.

This is a lovely pottery waterdropper as used by scholars to apply small amounts of water to the solidified ink stones when doing calligraphy. Great shape of a classic double gourd with dark green leaf leaning against a small cup. I believe this piece dates from the mid 19th century. What has me puzzled is the exact pottery style - it appears to be Chinese Yixing purple clay ware - but could equally be Japanese Banko ware of the period. Whichever, it is a delightful example of the potters craft ...click for details
