This is a quite old boxwood carving of a Chinese sage – we believe it dates from the 17th-18th century. The piece stands 6” tall by 3” wide by 1 ˝” thick. The figure is missing its arms - there are some water stains on the piece – and there is a stable split partially down the upper part of the head and body - - yet, it still has a fascinating attractive appearance.

This is a fine early wooden Chinese toggle made of a soft light brown wood. It is in the shape of a standing priest. In his right hand he holds a ruyi scepter. A Ruyi (Chinese pinyin: rúyě; Wade–Giles: ju-i;) is a curved decorative object that is a ceremonial sceptre in Chinese Buddhism or a talisman symbolizing power and good fortune in Chinese folklore. A traditional ruyi has a long S-shaped handle and a head fashioned like a fist, cloud, or lingzhi mushroom. Ruyi are constructed from divers ...click for details

This is a nicely carved figure made of boxwood of a standing sage. He holds a long staff in his left hand and an object in his right hand that is hard to determine. I could be a sacred peach – on the other hand, it has a flame like shape to it. Perhaps it was some type of ornament for placement on an altar.

The figure is highly detailed w ...click for details

This is lovely miniature boxwood carving of a lohan riding on a horse. It is possible that it was intended for use as a Chinese toggle – there are holes on the two ends –but we have tried to push a needle through from each end and it gets stuck about half way through – probably some old clogged dirt. The carving is quite detailed and the lohan’s face and the horse’s head are very realistic.

This is one of the most unusual items we have ever had in our collection – a tiny carved wood travel shrine. The Japanese have their travel shrines called zushi – most in enclosed cases – some even in ceramics. However, this is the first time we have ever seen a Chinese travel shrine.

The inner part of the piece has a hexagonal base on wh ...click for details

This is an late 18th to early 19th century bamboo carving of Liu Hai riding on the back of his three legged toad. He is shown playing with a string of coins that have been gathered for him by his toad. The piece measures 5” high and is 2 5/8” wide by 3” long front to back. It is in excellent condition – there is one tiny chip to the left front flipper. It has fine patina throughout. The carving is very fine and in great detail. ...click for details
