A deep Arita footed bowl with a scalloped edge dating from the late Meiji to early Taisho era - circa 1890-1920. The inner design is that of a wonderfully goofy looking tiger in a bamboo grove - his long tail curling up over his back.

The bowl measures 9" diameter at the top - 4" diameter at the foot and is 3 1/2" deep. The ...click for details

This is an extraordinary Japanese Komai dish with decoration of a tiger in mid stride as he stalks his prey. The metals are gold, silver, and copper with the gold shading from a coppery color to a yellow gold. The detailing is as fine as you will see. The nose is a reddish copper, claws are silver, silver used for shading on face and underneath on the throat and chest. It is signed on the back with Komai's mark. This piece measures 5 1/4” diameter and is 1 1/8” deep with tripod legs under th ...click for details

This is a wonderful Hirado porcelain netsuke in the form of a shi shi laying down with his mouth open. Every detail from the eyes and teeth to the curly hair on his back is beautifully executed as only the Hirado pottery artists could achieve. The piece is mold formed and the details were hand engraved. The bottom is unglazed and has the two holes that form the himotoshi for the connecting cord. The netsuke measures 1 Ύ” long by 1 Ό” wide by 1 1/8” tall and is in excellent condition – no chips, ...click for details

This is a framed print by Utagawa Kunihisa II (1832-1891) - a pupil and son-in-law of Utagawa Kuniyoshi. It portrays two women by a stream that flows by a garden fence. One of the women is kneeling and the other is bent over as if to look for something in the water. (I seem to recall some legend about a shogun’s palace floating cups on saucers down stream once a year for people to collect – but I cannot find any reference to that so I am probably just having a “senior moment”). There are pine t ...click for details

This is a great Japanese Arita plate in Shonsui-style to help celebrate the new Year of the Tiger. On the front of the plate are the twelve animals that make up the Chinese New Year zodiac. The border has a band of enclosed florets between dark blue circles. All twelve animals are very well painted and are enclosed in separate reserves against a blue background.

This is a stunning lacquer hai dai, a stand used for holding a guinomi (sake cup). The hai dai is decorated all over with a pattern of leaves falling on a flowing stream. These are executed in both gold and silver makie lacquer. Most interestingly, some of the leaves are filled with nashiji (pear skin) sprinkled gold makie – as are the lines in the streams. All the design in done on a dark black roiro lacquer base. The piece measures 5 5/8” diameter at the top, the stand flares to the base and ...click for details

This is a superb print of a Samurai in full regalia by one of the greatest masters of Japanese woodblock printing. It is done in muted tones of browns, tans and a very faint pink (lower part of his garment). (The small yellow rectangle seen in the upper right corner of a few of the photos is an unfortunate reflection of a ceiling light while taking the photos.)

This is a fine Japanese Hirado porcelain koro (censer) with a design of chidori (plovers) flying over the waves on two sides of the body. It stands on tripod legs and has handles in the form of a mythical beast’s face. The decoration is executed in the traditional Hirado underglaze Hirado blue. The lid is an open domed lid of bronze in a stylized shape of a chrysanthemum.

This is an early 19th century, Edo period, Arita plate with a design of three bare branches in a reserve in the center of the plate. A circle of stylized leaves surrounds these branches. It is possible that this is meant to represent the Three Friends of Winter – plum, bamboo and pine – but the only stem that we can clearly identify is that of the bamboo. The outer border design is of two large blue on white leaves with two smaller white on blue flowers alternating with the larger leaves. The ba ...click for details

This is a handsome lacquer kogo with a very interesting design of seashells done in indented depressions. One seashell has a design of branch of plum blossoms with a distant scene of hills. The second shell has a design of what appear to be maple leaves – again with distant hills. The third shell has a design of random streaks.
