This is a rare Japanese travel shrine known as a “zushi” and used by Buddhists to make their devotions while away from their home temple. This one is rare because the figures inside are of cast bronze with excellent old patina. The Buddhist triad consists of Buddha in the center and two attendants flanking his sides. Buddha stands of a raised lotus blossom while the two attendants stand on low rocks. The Buddha’s headdress has multiple Buddha tiny Buddha heads as decoration. An incised floral bo ...click for details

This is a fine old Japanese wooden okimono of a seated Kannon. Beautiful patina to the piece – some old minor age cracks. There are traces of old gesso paint that once covered the piece in its entirety – not particularly the final photo to see these traces. It is possible that the two hands might have been later replacements - yet they both show good signs of age. The figure measures 12” high and is 6” wide by 4 ½” deep. A fine example of early Japanese woodcarving.

A very unusual bust of Daruma carved in a sold black stone – we are not sure whether it is basalt, coal or jet. Suffice it to say that the exterior of the stone has a rough surface but the base and the face of Daruma have been polished to a very smooth high gloss. The piece measures 4” high by 2 ½” wide by 2” deep and is in excellent condition. There is a small linear flaw in the stone that runs from the eyebrow through the right eye. We date the piece to the early Meiji period – circa 1870-18 ...click for details

A rare late 17th to early 18th century Japanese Wooden carving of a Shinto acolyte. The carving is in a semi kneeling position with his hands in a clasped position and his right foot up on a rocky knoll. The entire carving was coated with gesso and then painted - much of the original outer paint still survives in the red garment - the gilded sleeves and the dark green pants. The face is missing about 20 % of its original paint - yet the beauty of the expression still shines through. Excellent ...click for details

This is a wooden carving of the Infant Buddha that appears to have been enclosed in a Japanese travel shrine – a zushi - because of the flat back which would have been at the rear of the zushi. The Buddha is standing on a double lotus pedestal and measures 6 1/4" high by 3" wide by 3" deep. The figure itself is decorated in red lacquer that has been covered in gold paint – now partially eroded with time. We date this Buddha to the mid Meiji period, circa 1880-1895. It is in exce ...click for details

This is a very rare travel shrine (zushi) with a cast bronze figure of the Eleven Headed Kannon. The case may be from the Meiji period, however we think it is entirely possible that the bronze Kannon is much older – possibly as early as the 13th/14th century. The bronze still bears traces of the polychrome paint which used to be on it. It stands 3 1/2" high and is 2 1/2" wide by 2" deep. The case is in excellent condition and the bronze Kannon shows its age but is is in remarkabl ...click for details

This is a very rare travel shrine (zushi) with carved wooden figures of Bishamon and is two assistants. The red lacquer on the outer case is the only zushi we have ever had in this color. At the centre of this small shrine are the three figures of the Buddhist divinity Bishamon, one of the gods of luck, and his two attendants Kichijτten and Zennishi. The piece measures 3 1/2" tall and is 3 1/2" wide with the doors open – 2 1/2" wide with the doors closed – it is 1 1/2" deep. ...click for details

An interesting Japanese travel shrine - known as a zushi. This one has two sets of two doors and is almost hexagonal in shape. There is no figure inside - although the remains of a wooden base carved as a rocky crag are in the bottom. What makes this a most unusual piece is the four painted demons on the four doors - painted over gilt paint. We do not know enough about Buddhist iconography to say for sure whether they represent guardians of demons - but they are certainly colorful. The piece dat ...click for details

A very striking wooden relief carving of Buddha standing on a bank of clouds. The carving was then mounted on a wooden plaque with gilt on the front. The Buddha shows signs of gesso and earlier coloring that include red and gold. The plaque - including the background mounting - measures 13 1/4" high by 5" wide by 5/8" thick.
