This is a superb 17th-18th century, Edo period carving of the Famous Buddhist monk Nichiren. He is seen in a seated position on what must have been a throne type chair - now missing. We believe it must have been removed from a temple shrine many years ago. The entire exterior appears to have been covered in gold leaf – some of which has begun peeling away. It is also possible that the piece was covered in thick gesso and gilded. ...click for details

An interesting Japanese travel shrine - known as a zushi. This one has two sets of two doors and is almost hexagonal in shape. There is no figure inside - although the remains of a wooden base carved as a rocky crag are in the bottom. What makes this a most unusual piece is the four painted demons on the four doors - painted over gilt paint. We do not know enough about Buddhist iconography to say for sure whether they represent guardians of demons - but they are certainly colorful. The piece dat ...click for details
