This is a very fine signed late Edo Japanese Gosho doll in the position of a small boy seated with his arm upraised and holding what appears to be a bow in his left hand. The doll is rich in detail, it was well modeled in an artfully executed pose. The one-piece body is finished in white gofun (crushed oyster shell), and the expressive facial features are delicately hand painted. The doll is scantily clad with an embroidered tan/gold chirimen silk bib or stomach cloth (“haragake”) which is tied ...click for details

This is a very appealing example of a category of Japanese dolls that are know as Gosho Ningyo. It is in the form of a crawling infant with a red bib and a red ribbon around his waist – on the bottom is a multi colored striped cloth square. It is in reasonably good condition – a couple of spots where the gofun has either cracked or worn off – and the left hand and head have been restored at some time. We particularly like the tufts o ...click for details

A brightly painted Nara Itto-bori doll of a Noh Dancer in full costume. It comes in its original box and is in excellent condition. The box has two sets of Kanji characters. The first set translates as "Gyosen" and the second set translates as "Nara Ningyo(doll)" – two of the other characters were too illegible to translate. The doll measures 6” high and is 3” wide by 3” deep.

An old Japanese kimekomi doll of a small boy with outstretched right arm. The doll is an original kamo ningyo in that it is made of willow wood with the face and hands left unfinished. The hand on this doll has become slightly detached and is hanging from the sleeve at the rest - easily corrected. The doll measures 2 5/8" high by 3" wide by 1 7/8" deep - we date it to the mid to late Edo to early Meiji period, circa 1850-1890s. Very good condition with the exception of the loose h ...click for details
