This is a summer chawan (tea bowl)- or simply a bowl - that is probably from the Kyo-Yaki ware potters. The bowl has the face of a scowling Daruma on one side – the top of his head actually goes over the rim and into the top rim of the inside of the bowl. There are five Kanji characters on the other side of the bowl and an impressed signature on the foot.

A fine small Satsuma koro (incenser) decorated all over with hundreds of tiny butterflies or moths and three large butterflies. The design is in gold overlay enamel on the classic tan crackle glaze that is characteristic of Satsuma. It measures 4” high and is 4” diameter at the waist. It is in excellent condition and has a signature on the base – not translated. We date it to the late Meiji period, circa 1890-1910.

995.00This is one of the nicest Satsuma tea bowls – chawan- we have had in the collection. It has the classic base glaze of tan crackle that is characteristic of all Satsuma pieces. In the center of the bowl and on the sides are overglaze enamel paintings of schools of fish – we believe them to be Japanese Rainbow Smelt. The fish are in a thick enamel that gives them a lovely three dimensional look.

A small Japanese Satsuma tea bowl - chawan - with a body that is more white than the usual darker tan of Satsuma. Encircling the entire chawan on the outside is a fierce dragon with great detail to its scales, face, and claws. The inside of the piece is not decorated - there is no signature, but it clearly looks like the work of the Kinkozan potters. The chawan measures 3 1/4" diameter at the top - 1 1/4" diameter at the base - and stands 1 1/2" high. It is in good condition - on ...click for details

This is one of the finest quality Satsuma chawan (tea bowls) that is clearly in the same class as that of Yabu Meizan. The painting on this chawan is extraordinary in every respect. The exterior of the chawan is decorated into seven separate bands - the top band is a black and gold geometric design and the second band is a lovely floral scene of multi colored flowers. The third band is superb: it consists of tiny paintings of karako (Japanese children) engaged in a number of different activit ...click for details

Description Continued: The chawan measures 5 ½” diameter at the top and is 2 Ύ” high. There is a fine raised gold signature on the base that translates as “Kinkozan”. This type of raised gold signature was reserved by the Kinkozan ceramicists for their finest quality Satsuma pieces. The bowl is in excellent condition – there is a stable hairline on the base that can be seen in two of the photos – it does not go through to the other side of the chawan. We date this piece to the Golden Age of Sats ...click for details

This is a very nice Satsuma plate dating from the late Meiji period, circa 1885-1910. The design is that of large white Japanese crane in flight over a garden full of a variety of flowers. The design is a thick overglaze enamel – particularly so for the crane - over the traditional tan crackled ground of Satsuma. There is a clump of grass at the bottom of the garden and the entire rim has a design of a band triangles in green and red that nicely frame the main design. ...click for details

This is a lid to what have been a very large jar. Usually, we would not be listing a piece that is part of another larger item; however, this lid is so nice that it stands alone as a decoration. Atop the lid is a very finely carved golden shi shi temple dog. On the four side are detailed paintings of Shinto priests engaged in conversations, reading and other activities. The bottom of the lid acts as a flared pedestal so that the lid looks as if it were a free standing item. The piece is in very ...click for details
