This fine early Japanese cloisonne round covered box (kogo) is 3" wide and 2" high. It has a lovely design of flowers and butterflies. It is in excellent condition - exterior is fine, all the gilding around the rim has worn off leaving only the copper. The rim on the bottom half has many small bends and there is a chip to the inside of the lid as shown. No mark. I date this one from the early Meiji period circa 1870's. This dating can be confirmed by the many tiny pinholes in the p ...click for details

This is a beautiful example of early Japanese cloisonne work early Meiji period, circa 1870s. The scene is a very detailed and colorful one of a sky dragon over a landscape with hills and mountains and pagodas and huts in nearby villages. There is also a large body of water – probably a lake – with the classic Japanese stylized white-capped waves. In the background we find a gorgeous rendition of the revered Mt. Fuji with brilliant whites for the snowy cap. The dragon is multi-colored grays, nea ...click for details

This is a very handsome pair of Octagonal Jars with wooden lids – possibly intended as tea caddies or just storage jars. They are two of the most delicately designed examples of totai that we have seen. The term totai technique is known as 'Totai shippo' and is very difficult to make. This is an extremely difficult ceramic technique, which lasted for only a few years in the early Meiji period. It consisted of making a Satsuma earthenware base and then placing a cloisonne design over the ...click for details

They are not signed – condition is excellent with a nice old patina. We date them to the mid to late Meiji period, circa 1880-1910.

$195.00

This is an example of the earliest Japanese cloisonné. It is interesting because of the shape – the top of the jarlet is a rounded square – which then merges into globular shape all the way to the bottom. The design is that of many small flowers surrounded by tiny tight cloisons – then the top has a design of white cloisons that form a drape of white lappets. The jarlet measures 4” in diameter at its widest and is 2 ¾” high. We date it to the early Meiji period, circa 1870s-1880s. ...click for details

This is a lovely Japanese cloisonne vase with a large group of flowers and green leaves. Some of the leaves look like lotus leaves to us – but the flowers do not appear to be lotus flowers. Not being a gardener, I cannot identify the flowers except to say that are quite beautiful with the dark green leaves all set over a peach pink background. The vase measures 8” high and is 3 ½” diameter at the shoulder. It is in excellent condition with no chips, hairlines or restoration. It is not signed. We ...click for details

This is an early Meiji Japanese footed sake cup washer done allover in early Japanese cloisonne standard technique. We date it to the period of 1870-1890 as that was when these more pitted examples of Japan were the standard before they learned how to refine their pieces with high polish and large areas of open space background. This bowl has a central reserve of the long feathery tailed turtle know as a Minogame and is surrounded by many intricate geometric figures and stylized flowers and vine ...click for details

This is a rather unusual shape for a Japanese cloisonne vase with its long narrow neck and it flared base with a sharp edge to the waist of the base. Because of the color combinations and shape we have an idea it might have been made for the Persian market. It dates from the early Meiji period, circa 1870s and is in excellent condition. The normal small pitting is typical of the earliest Japanese cloisonne. The vase could have been either a bud vase or an oil vase. It measures 7" tall and i ...click for details
