This is a nice rectangular Japanese covered box – kogo – that has a ground of plain gold makie lacquer and a design on the top lid. The design is that of two pheasants under a maple tree – they appear to be pecking around the flowers and vegetation for seeds to eat. The inside of the kogo is executed in dark reddish brown nashiji (pear ...click for details

This is a fun little paperweight or scroll weight in the shape of a sleeping cat. He lies in wait with a rather menacing expression on his face. The piece is covered in a dark brown lacquer that is accented with gold paint to show the fur – the whiskers – the paws, etc. There is a medium sized area of lacquer missing over his right eye and part of his right ear. (I like to fantasize that he has been in a fight with a dog and is waiting for his revenge – you should see the dog ! ) ...click for details

This is one of the most unusual Japanese lacquer pieces we have ever seen or had in the collection. The box is a Tobacco Box – “tabako ire) made in the shape of an eggplant. It is a papier mache form made over a mold and then coated with multiple layers of black roiro lacquer with overtones of purple. As a result of the method of making the box, it is quite light and rather delicate. The process of making it is best described in the book “A Sprinkling of Gold” – see later paragraphs. ...click for details
