This Japanese iron pot is approximately from the mid part of 1900s. The body and lid of the pot are made from cast-iron. On the sides of the kettle there are pine trees in low relief. On the lid, the knob for lifting the lid is a case miniature horse with saddle – an unusual touch as most have shi shis in this area. The piece measures 8” to the top of the handle – 4 ½” to the top of the lid know and is 5 ¾” diameter. A late Edo to early Meiji iron tetsubin (teapot) cast with a rough surface on which are several groupings - a total of nine - in low relief of the Imperial sixteen petal mon. The small lid is made of a lightweight copper/bronze alloy and is topped with a roseate shaped knopf. The tetsubin measures 8 ½” from the tip of the spout to the back of the pot. A Meiji period Japanese pottery tea bowl (Chawan) with a tannish glaze and an underglaze decoration of a flowering blossom on a limb - we think possibly a plum blossom signifying Spring. The chawan measures approximately 5" diameter at the top and stand 3" high. It is in excellent condition.

A Japanese chawan with a granular tannish glaze over a darker tan clay – decorated with three yellow water lily buds with green leaves. There is a circular stacking ring in the bottom of the bowl – caused in the kiln when several pieces are stacked one of top of the other prior to firing. The base of the chawan is unglazed. The piece measures 5 ½” diameter and is 2 ½” high – it dates from the mid to late Meiji period, circa 1880-1900 and is in excellent condition. Not signed.

Two mukozuke dishes - appetizer dishes used in the were used as part of the service to serve the kaiseki meal, part of the formal tea ceremony. Both dishes are glazed in a soft tan crackle glaze that is very possibly Karatsu pottery, although we have not encountered Karatsu that also has an overglaze element in the design such as that in these two dishes. Bamboo Design Chawan – Late Meiji/Taisho - Early Japanese studio pottery chawan or teabowl, probably 1880's to 1920's. Its exterior is decorated in an allover wax- resist technique of very thick slip in cocoa brown w/ slight red tinges over 2 different Black Bamboo motives on each side. The bowl's interior is decorated in a thick white slip symbolic of swirling wind or waves over a yellow stoneware body. Bowl is heavy!
