This is a very old portable brush and ink holder known as a yatate. When we first acquired the piece we thought it was just a simple folk art hand carved ink well and brush that was fan shaped and with hand wrought bronze pivot point. The piece is 10 “long by 1” deep and is ½” wide at its widest. It is made from a lovely dark old wood – we believe that it is was constructed from hinoki (Japanese Cedar wood).

This is a gorgeous stand hand made of curling hardwood burl with a sloped top and sinuous natural form. It dates from the Meiji period, late 19th century. The stand’s swirling edges follows the natural tree shape, creating a wonderfully elegant movement. The natural deep knotholes add a further interesting element to its pure organic form. The inherent natural dark honey/caramel hue of the wood enhances the rich grain in the burl, giving its graphic wavy design a luminous depth and sheen. ...click for details

An unusual japanese Wooden Brush Rest, late 19th century, Meiji period. He sits beside a pyramid shaped object or maybe a pile of something, it is not clear. Length 2 1/8 ins. (5.5 cms). The dark wood in close grained but quite light. It is in excellent condition with no damage and no repairs. This piece would have been used to prop up the scholars or artists br ...click for details

Japanese Boxwood Okimono of a young woman looking in her mirror. Beautiful detail - a lovely face and fine detailing to her kimono and sash. The mirror she holds is removable - amazing that it is still with the piece and not lost. Measures 4 ½" high x 3 ¾' wide x 3 ¾" deep. Excellent condition except for the crack in the front of the piece just below the sash. The crack was there when I obtained the piece eight years ago and has never gotten any wider. Believed to date from the lat ...click for details

$350.00

Very handsome carved wood figure of a Japanese priest - I believe a Shinto priest as opposed to Buddhist. Covered with a light gesso glaze - the piece stands 11" tall x 3 1/2" wide x 3" deep. The priest holds a scepter in one hand and a round object in the left hand. The stand measures 1" high x 6 1/4" wide x 4 3/4" deep. Good condition with some chipping and rubbing to the gesso - but still retains a wonderfully serene presence. Dates from late Edo to early Meiji p ...click for details
