This is a framed print by Utagawa Kunihisa II (1832-1891) - a pupil and son-in-law of Utagawa Kuniyoshi. It portrays two women by a stream that flows by a garden fence. One of the women is kneeling and the other is bent over as if to look for something in the water. (I seem to recall some legend about a shogun’s palace floating cups on saucers down stream once a year for people to collect – but I cannot find any reference to that so I am probably just having a “senior moment”). There are pine t ...click for details

This is a superb print of a Samurai in full regalia by one of the greatest masters of Japanese woodblock printing. It is done in muted tones of browns, tans and a very faint pink (lower part of his garment). (The small yellow rectangle seen in the upper right corner of a few of the photos is an unfortunate reflection of a ceiling light while taking the photos.)

This is an intriguing print by Kunisada as it portrays a Geisha seated waiting for someone – apparently a samurai – as she hold the samurai’s sword in her two hands wrapped in a bundle of straw. One can only guess as to why she is holding it for that person.

The registration and the colors in the print are excellent– the garment worn by the ...click for details

This print of Mt. Fuji as seen from the Hara station of the “Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido” is one of the few vertical prints Hiroshige did in his series of Tokaido prints. In several of his Fuji prints he portrayed the monumental size of Mt. Fuji – and its importance to the Japanese as a sacred mountain – he had the top of the volcano extend up through the margin of the print. It is as if he did not feel such a landmark should be contained in a conventional confined frame. ...click for details

Two very nice early Japanese prints – one of a mountain scene with a boat in the distance – the other of a large rocky overhang on a mountain. One print measures 7” by 4 ¾” with an image size of 6” by 4”. The second print measures 7” by 4 7/8” – image size is 6” by 3 7/8”. They are in very good condition – minimal toning or wrinkling, we date them to the early Meiji period, circa 1870s-1880s. Both prints are signed - The first print translates as "Kikosuke" and the second, clearly by ...click for details
