This is a fun woodblock print by the famed Edo period woodblock artist, Kunisada(Toyokuni III). It is titled “Nango Rikimaru With Cut Foot” and is from Kunisada’s Comic Pictures Series. The print portrays a samurai dancing around on his right foot as he examines a cut or puncture wound on the outside of his left calf. This is an intriguing print by Kunisada as it portrays a Geisha seated waiting for someone – apparently a samurai – as she hold the samurai’s sword in her two hands wrapped in a bundle of straw. One can only guess as to why she is holding it for that person.

The registration and the colors in the print are excellent– the garment worn by the ...click for details

This print of Mt. Fuji as seen from the Hara station of the “Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido” is one of the few vertical prints Hiroshige did in his series of Tokaido prints. In several of his Fuji prints he portrayed the monumental size of Mt. Fuji – and its importance to the Japanese as a sacred mountain – he had the top of the volcano extend up through the margin of the print. It is as if he did not feel such a landmark should be contained in a conventional confined frame. ...click for details

Two very nice early Japanese prints – one of a mountain scene with a boat in the distance – the other of a large rocky overhang on a mountain. Both prints are signed - The first print translates as "Kikosuke" and the second, clearly by ...click for details

This is a delightful print by the master printer, Shibata Zeshin, that portrays Okame preparing some kind of red paste to put into a box in front of her. The print measures 9 ¾” by 6 ½” and is quite toned. We date it to the late Edo to early Meiji period, circa 1850-1870s because of the amount of toning. Despite the toning, it is a fine example of Zeshin’s drawing technique.
