The domed box has all four sides and top decorated with black lacquer into which complex designs have been embedded with inlaid mother-or pearl. The top has an oval shaped reserve in which a fine pattern of leaves is symmetrically arranged within a solid border. This reserve is surrounded by a series of small inter-connected circles with tiny six sided flowers in each circle.

This is a very fine and rare Hirado okimono of a dragon amongst the waves. A very similar dragon is shown in the Cardeiro Collection in his book – “Hirado Ware” by C. Philip Cardeiro, Art Asia Museum, 1989, plate and catalog # 49. Cardeiro describes his dragon as follows: “A dragon swirling through waves. The dragon is glazed in pale celadon, the waves, and a brocade ball in the dragon’s claw, are blue. Date: 1850-1890. Length 19.5 cm.(7.7 inches)”. (See photo 12). ...click for details

This is a museum quality ivory okimono of one of Japan’s more interesting mythical creatures – the Kappa. The Kappa is seated with his arms clasped around his legs and with a happily mischievous smile on his face. He has a sharply beaked face and the traditional depression in his head. The back of the Kappa is carved in great detail like a hard turtle shell. The piece measures 3 ½” tall by 2” wide by 1 5/8” deep. This is a zitan ink-paste box in the shape of a large melon or gourd lying on the ground. The gourd is surrounded with its leaves and branches and a bee sits on top of the gourd. The carving is quite intricate and extremely well detailed. The box is in superb condition with no chips, cracks, or restorations. It measures 5 ½” long by 3 ¼” wide by 2 ¼” high. We date it to the early to mid Qing dynasty, circa 1700s-1820s.

This is a remarkable Japanese bronze/copper alloy figure of a seated tiger with a ferocious countenance. The piece is quite large and – although it is hollow – is quite heavy. The detail work on the casting is superb – the stripes, the fierce snarling expression with teeth bared, the long tail curled back over the right leg – every aspect of the animal is executed in precise detail.
