This Kutani dish is decorated in an underglaze blue with a three-petal flower and a large leaf with gradually smaller sizes. On the other side are two more colorful dragonflies near a leaf of the plant. The cover to the cover has no overglaze decoration – just three heart shaped holes from which the incense smoke can emerge and a seated shi shi with gilt paint – some of which has worn off. The details are much finer than those normally found in these popular carvings - note, for example, the detailed grill work on the windows of the house. It is obvious that this carver was quite meticulous in depicting a true to life scene. The main section is a tannish color soapstone and the entire upper section is attached to a darker soapstone base. In the lower part and right side of the design is a painting of leaning trees and large rocks - executed in dark cobalt blue and trees and rock in shadows. It measure 10” diameter and is 1 1/2" deep. Condition is excellent with no chips or cracks - one minuscule rim frit that occurred during the firing. We date it to the early Showa period, circa 1930-1960.
