This is a nice little Persian box made of paper-mâché with a black lacquer coating. The exterior top has then been painted with a lovely scene of four deer in light golden yellow paint on a bright green base color. The four sides are also painted with the same colors and each of the sides has a deer on it. We are guessing that the animals represent deer as three of them have antlers and the other five do not. They are surrounded with green grasses and tall evergreens. The box is rectangular in f ...click for details

This is a fine small Japanese studio ceramic bud vase with lovely colors. The underglaze is a soft powder blue – at the top of the vase there is a tan and brown speckled glaze that drips down from the neck to about 40 per cent of the vase. The vase measures 5 ¼” high and is 3” diameter at its widest. It is not signed. Condition is excellent with no chips or hairlines. We date it to the Taisho to early Showa period, circa 1925-1950.

This is an interesting piece of Japanese porcelain. It is a shallow bowl with a crackle finish and a Greek Key design in underglaze cobalt blue on the border. There are two small extensions on opposite sides of the piece that are pierced with small holes – presumably for use in hanging the dish from above. The bottom of the dish is a solid matte brown glaze with tiny tripod legs. Why the piece would be both designed to hang from something and also to stand on its tripod base is a mystery to us. ...click for details

This is a rather showy Kutani figure of Kannon standing on a dragon that encircles her legs. The Kannon measures 11 ½” high by 6” wide by4” deep and is in excellent condition. She stands upon a series of wild blue stylized blue waves with the purple dragon swimming in the waves. Many areas of the figure are highlighted by low relief slip outlines of the colorful costumes. We date the piece to the Taisho to Showa period, circa 1920s-1950s.

This is a small lacquer dish with a design in gold makie on the top showing a koto, a set of pipes and a festival drum. There are also several gold makie maple leaves spaced around the top. The makie design is on a sold black roiro ground. The bottom of the dish is done in the negoro lacquer style - Negoro lacquer wares were produced at the Negoro-ji temple complex in Izumi province. The red layers of lacquer on Negoro wares are intended to gradually wear away with use, revealing the black lacqu ...click for details

This is a very nice ukiyo-e print of a beautiful woman (Bijinga) in a medium brown kimono with soft white circles in the design. She is holding a little girl wearing a colorful baby kimono. You can you see a small baby hand sticking out right above and below lady's front neck? The lady's left hand is holding the baby with her right hand crossing into her left sleeve. The baby must be her child.

This is a beautiful multi-colored Chinese porcelain bowl with a design of two fierce red dragons in underglaze red and a background of white clouds in underglaze cobalt blue. The dragons would be imperial dragons as evidenced by the five claws on each. Both dragons are chasing the “sacred pearl”. The interior of the bowl is a pure white glaze. At the base of the low footed bowl has a band of geometric designs with lightly scalloped edges. ...click for details

This is a charming little Chinese brass teapot with a large - almost circular – handle. On the sides of the teapots body a dragon has been incised with some sharp tool. The main body is 2 ¾” diameter at its widest – the distance from the back of the handle to the tip of the spout is 4 ¼” and the height to the top of the handle is 5”. We date it to the late Qing to early Republic period, circa 1900 – 1930s. It is in excellent condition.

This is a remarkably striking modern Japanese studio bowl executed in emerald green glaze with gold leaf design. The green glaze is a shiny glaze and the design in gold leaf has been done by very carefully cutting strips and rectangles of gold leaf and the applying them to the green ground in this striped sunburst design. It must have them been covered by a very thin transparent glaze to protect the design from peeling. One can see the gold leaf clearly using a ten power loupe. It must have been ...click for details

This is an unusual small sake pourer in that it has two holes in the sides for hanging the piece from a cord. We have never seen this feature in other sake pourers. The bottle has a nice simple design of budding flowers on long vines - the design done in underglaze brown iron.

The bottle measures 6" high and is 2" diameter. It i ...click for details
