This is a lovely and striking Japanese studio vase that starts with a round base then slowly tapers to a squarish top. All along the sides there are a series of six bands of nearly vertical zig zag cuts in the tannish – grayish – blue colored clay. The vase measures 11 Ύ” high and is 4” square at the top and 3 Ό” diameter at the base. It is is excellent condition with no chips, cracks or restorations. This is a very handsome stoneware pottery cooking pot with a handle on the side. It was made by the Winchcombe Pottery and is by Sidney Tustin. It is not a tea-pot, but a small cooking pot. Winchcombe Pottery was, and is, in Gloucestershire and was started by the well-known potter Michael Cardew. Tustin and the Finch brothers (from memory) were his best-known assistants. A very curious and unusual piece that we believe dates from the mid to late 20th century. What we have here is a round covered pot with two handles and a lid with what is unquestionably a pottery body – but it is covered with a gorgeous cardinal red glazed crackle material that appears to be glass.
