This is a striking Japanese studio vase – the main body is almost globular shape- then it tapers to a narrow neck and then flares out to wide thick rim. The underglaze is a dark chocolate color. At the shoulder the glaze is lighter – almost a milk chocolate – that has five black rings encircling the top of the vase. Then – before straightening out to the vertical rim, the brown glaze goes back to the darker brown.

This is a handsome snuff bottle made of a material which we believe to be jasper, a form of quartz. Jasper is an opaque rock of virtually any color stemming from the mineral content of the original sediments or ash. Patterns arise during the consolidation process forming flow and depositional patterns in the original silica rich sediment or volcanic ash. This mineral breaks with a smooth surface, and is used for ornamentation or as a gemstone. It can be highly polished and is used for vases, s ...click for details

A very highly detailed okimono (figurine) of a seated sage executed in pot metal with bronze plating. Every detail of his robe - face - beard - front and back is very finely carved. The piece measures 2 1/2" wide by 2 1/2" high by 2" deep. It is in excellent condition with some small areas where the bronze plating has worn away over the years. We date it to the late Meiji to Taisho era, circa 1900-1925 - however it is quite possible from the patina that it is older than that.

This is a study stone for the scholars studio – made in the shape of three peaks in a distant mountain range. The stone appears to be volcanic rock - possibly a light-colored, uniformly solid rock called rhyolite. There is no fitted base for the stone – but is does stand evenly and does look very much like a distant range when looked at on a table or shelf. The piece measures 8” long by 6” high by 4” thick and is in excellent condition. Age is impossible to determine – so we will classify it as ...click for details

This is a small bowl with every rim that has a wonderful presence. The base glaze is a light tan – almost white. Over that there is a large number of small silver splashes that look like snows flakes and are very reflective. The bowl has an evert top rim and is signed on the bottom. We have not been able to figure out what the signature is – not even sure it is Japanese; however, we have seen Japanese ceramics with this type of snowflake overglaze on other Japanese ceramics. ...click for details

The carving is well detailed and the patina is very good. Unfortunately there is a split in the pot that runs down one side.

As the base straightens out to a vertical body, we find a rounded body with a blue stream connecting reserves of the Three Friends of Summer. The back of the vase is primarily a plain white glaze. This is a well-made blue and white Arita dish with a transfer design of a dragon and a phoenix. The dragon is traditionally associated with the Emperor and the Phoenix, or Ho-O bird, is associated with the Empress. Stylized clouds surround both symbols. In the center of the dish is a round reserve with a formal arrangement of three large leaves ans smaller vines. The base of the dish glazed in pure white with no decoration. ...click for details

This is an interesting small guinomi made with a dark brown glaze and in a twisted shape. The interior of the piece has a mottled white glaze and there are areas of the mottle white on the exterior as well. The bottom is unglazed with the chocolate brown clay with dark spots in it. There is a signature – not translated. The piece measures 3 ½” high by 3 Ό” diameter at the top. We are not sure of the date so will be conservative and date it to the early to mid 20th century.
