This is an interesting dark green glazed vase with a crackle glaze. It is wrapped in a raffia carrying “cage”. The vase measures 7” high and is 4” diameter at its widest. It is in excellent condition and dates from the mid Showa period, circa 1940s – 50s.

A nice little Japanese Koransha dish with a design in dark blue of a cheery tree with red cherries. It measures 2 ½” long by 2” wide and is 1” deep. We date it to the late Showa period, 1960s-1980s. This is a handsome studio bowl with a series of four dimpled impressions and a wonderful blend of glaze colors. The base color is a crackled tan glaze – then around the sides there are area of soft green – chocolate brown and a light brown rim. The interior has the same light brown crackled glaze as the rim, The glazing stops about 1” above the base, which reveals the dark brown clay from which the bowl was made covered with a light clear glaze. This is a strikingly handsome Japanese brush pot mounted on three legs. The interior appears to have been made with the techniques known as salt glazing as is a soft greenish gray color. The outside appears to be ash glazed with the typical uneven colors caused by the placement of the piece in the kiln as the ash blows through the kiln. Or, it could be a variety of Raku-ware.

A very pretty small soft turquoise celadon koro (incense burner) with three flame like handles on the sides. It sits on tripod legs – the top has ten small almost heart shaped holes for the incense smoke to emerge. The piece measures 3 ¾” diameter and is 4” high to the top of the flame-like handles. It is early to mid Taisho/Showa period. It is in excellent condition.

This is an interestingly shaped studio bowl with a shiny dark brown glaze and a large area in the inside bottom of the bowl that is a crackled green glaze that looks like glass. The bowl has three pinched area on the sides which gives it a slightly triangular round shape. The rim of the bowl is a lighter brown – almost milk chocolate in color.

This is a rather abstract forged iron figure of a warrior brandishing a spear while riding on a horse. All the details are in cut out and/or coiled lines – yet the spirit of the warrior is quite distinct. These forged iron figures exhibit the technical skill and artistry that Bamana tribe blacksmiths in Mali brought to their work. This is a fine Japanese chawan – tea bowl – with a very simple but lovely grayish blue crackle glaze. On one side there are two horizontal stripes in underglaze iron rust color. The chawan measures 4 12” diameter at the mouth and is 2 3/8 diameter at the foot and stands 2 ½” high. There is an impressed raised signature on the inner side of the raised foot which is either SH or HS depending on which way one holds the piece. This is a fine pair of handmade Japanese folk art basket containers. They are made of tightly woven rattan reeds and bound by strips of thin bamboo that are reinforced with bronze straps bradded into the basket.
