This is a handsome Japanese bowl in the shape of a barber’s bowl. (A barbers bowl is a ceramic bowl with one side indented to make room for the chin of the person to be shaved.) The bowl measures 10” diameter and it 3” deep. It is in excellent condition with no chips or problems. The long thin brown line is the glaze crawling in the kiln – not a hairline. The bowl has the classic crackle tan finish of Shino pottery and has a lovely thick overglaze of ivory white dripping down the inside and outs ...click for details

This is a hexagonal shaped tea caddy dating from the early 20th century – probably from about 1915-1940. The piece has an incised design of a Japanese woman washing out a scarf in a stream. Two of the smaller sides have designs of flowers blooming from under a rock. The remaining four sides have calligraphy which we believe are a poem – not translated. This shape of tea caddy was popular throughout Asia – particularly in Japan and China. ...click for details

This is a most interesting and finely bronze casting from the 1970s. It was purchased from a dealer in fine African antique masks and artifacts in 1980. The dealer informed me that this was done by an artist of the Burkina Faso tribe to mark the moon landings and is that artist’s creative idea of what a creature on the moon might look like. While it is obviously an imaginative figure, you have to enjoy both the excellent craftsmanship of the bronze worker artist and the creativity of his imagine ...click for details

This handsome studio vase dates from sometime between the 1920s and the 1950s. It has a particularly attractive glaze. The underglaze appears to be a tan glaze at the lower section of the vase – then a dark brown glaze on the tapered section at the top. Then an iron design of plants was drawn on the tan glaze at the bottom half. After that, it would seem that a different ivory colored glaze was applied to the vase that was formulated to make bubbles that pop open during the firing. The net resul ...click for details

This is a fascinating pottery vessel with a human face. It was purchased as dating from the Yayoi period of Japan. However, consultations with two experts on early Japanese ceramics have advised me that this is NOT from that period. It follows, then, that the piece must be a 19th-20th century vessel done in a style reminiscent of that period’s pottery. Regardless of the true dating, we found it to be a delightful piece of pottery. ...click for details
