This is a handsome Japanese bowl in the shape of a barber’s bowl. (A barbers bowl is a ceramic bowl with one side indented to make room for the chin of the person to be shaved.) The bowl measures 10” diameter and it 3” deep. It is in excellent condition with no chips or problems. The long thin brown line is the glaze crawling in the kiln – not a hairline. The bowl has the classic crackle tan finish of Shino pottery and has a lovely thick overglaze of ivory white dripping down the inside and outs ...click for details

A small Japanese water dropper (suiteki) – solid white glaze porcelain with the exception of five orange dots used to highlight the central prunus blossom. The blossom and scrolling vines are molded into the dropper. Measures 2 3/6" by 1 7/8" and stands 7/8" high on four short feet located at the corners. Excellent condition with some evidence of wear on the bottom of the feet and ink stains at the corner hole where the water drips out. We date it to the late Meiji to Taisho perio ...click for details

This is a hexagonal shaped tea caddy dating from the early 20th century – probably from about 1915-1940. The piece has an incised design of a Japanese woman washing out a scarf in a stream. Two of the smaller sides have designs of flowers blooming from under a rock. The remaining four sides have calligraphy which we believe are a poem – not translated. This shape of tea caddy was popular throughout Asia – particularly in Japan and China. ...click for details

It is number 70/182 and features Maki’s signature, seal, and intaglio printing style. The print is in excellent condition – not examined out of the frame. The frame has one Ό” nick on the bottom edge.

This is a relatively small lacquered natsume dating from the Taisho to early Showa period, circa 1925-1950s. It has a very pretty reddish brown lacquer base color. On the top of the lid there is a decoration of three double gourds with cords around the middle executed in gold makie lacquer. The natsume measures 2 ½” high and is 2 ½” diameter at widest. It is in fine condition – a few small nicks in the body of the tea caddy. It is signed on the top with the lacquerware artist name - "Gozan& ...click for details

This handsome studio vase dates from sometime between the 1920s and the 1950s. It has a particularly attractive glaze. The underglaze appears to be a tan glaze at the lower section of the vase – then a dark brown glaze on the tapered section at the top. Then an iron design of plants was drawn on the tan glaze at the bottom half. After that, it would seem that a different ivory colored glaze was applied to the vase that was formulated to make bubbles that pop open during the firing. The net resul ...click for details

$295.00

This is a fascinating pottery vessel with a human face. It was purchased as dating from the Yayoi period of Japan. However, consultations with two experts on early Japanese ceramics have advised me that this is NOT from that period. It follows, then, that the piece must be a 19th-20th century vessel done in a style reminiscent of that period’s pottery. Regardless of the true dating, we found it to be a delightful piece of pottery. ...click for details

This is a striking tall, somewhat thin, vase with a thick glaze done in a bluish celadon color. The vase has vertical impressed lines separating low relief decorations of a budding plant with many leaves. The vase measures 14” high by 6 ½” diameter and is in excellent condition – no chips, nicks, crack or restorations. We date it to about 1920 – Taisho period – possibly as late as the 1930s, Meiji period.

This handsome smell red lacquer teapot is covered on all sides and the inside with red lacquer and no designs. The only area that is not red lacquer is the bottom which is roiro black lacquer. At first we thought it might be a modern plastic piece – but, then, when we examined it more carefully with a ten power loupe – we could see the grain of the underlying wood on the bottom of the pot. So we are convinced it is a genuine lacquer piece - probably dating from the Taisho to early Showa period, ...click for details

This fine tray would be a wonderful accompaniment for serving sake or tea. It is made of woven strips of either rattan or strips of bamboo - we can never tell the difference. It was then lacquered with several coats of a reddish maroon lacquer on all side - top, edges and bottom.
