This is a most unusual but quite handsome lacquer tray - we think it is probably Chinese in origin but cannot prove that. The design is a low relief design of a horse pulling a cart with what appears to be two passengers in it. The cart has a large fringed umbrella as a shade for the passengers. The shape of the horse and the two wheeled cart are what lead us to the conclusion that the tray is from China and probably dates to the mid 1920s to 1930s. The workmanship is excellent. The design appea ...click for details

A scholars viewing stone made from what appears to be soapstone with aggregates of other rocks – different colors of grey, pale yellow, bluish grey and dark streaks. Obvious signs of some tooling to smooth the stone out and bring out the natural colors. The stone is in a poorly carved stand that has been stained a dark red – it would need some more work to make it a stable stand. The stone measures 8 ½” wide by 5 ½” high by 1 ¼” thick. Very hard to estimate a date – we will guess late Qing – ear ...click for details

This is a fine natural rootwood piece that has not been enhanced in any way. It would make a superb base for an intricate ikebana arrangement – or it can simply stand on its own as a beautiful piece of natural sculpture. It can be set on several of its sides and present a different aspect in each position – each quite handsome. The piece measures 14” long by 9” high by 13 ½” wide depending on which way it is placed on its side. A fine decorative addition to an Asian collection. We believe it is ...click for details

A very attractive Chinese 19th century scholars water dropper executed in the Ming style but dating from the 19th century. . The piece is executed in lovely blue underglaze and is formed in the shape of a Chinese Junk vessel. In addition to the opening on the spout, there is a further opening at the top of the dropper. Once the body was filled with water through this portal, sealing this orifice with the finger momentarily would result (through surface tension forces) in a drop of water coming ...click for details
