This is a fun okimono of Daruma in a standing position and with a fierce glare on his face. The entire piece with the exception of his robe is glazed in a lovely thick celadon glaze. The face is unglazed and is very well carved to highlight Daruma’s expression. On the base of the okimono there is a two character impressed mark. It has been loosely translated as "Kyusetsu" or "Kyuwa" - second letter is hard to recognize. The piece measures 8 5/8” high by 3 Ό” wide by 3 Ό” d ...click for details

This is a rather unusual figure of Daruma in that the background clay on the face, chest and hands is the chocolate brown color of Bizen pottery - yet the robe and scepter are done in a thin overglaze enamel in a dirty white color with tan and brown highlights. The Daruma has a particularly piercing look to his face as if he were mad about something. The figure measures 9” high by 4” wide by 3” deep. There is no signature – the base in not glazed and has the impression of cheesecloth that it st ...click for details

This lovely simple mukozuke dish is of Shino ware, a name possibly derived from the name of the sixteenth century tea enthusiast, Shinosōshin. Shino ware was almost as highly prized by Teamasters as Raku ware. They admired the simple hand-made shapes and the unpredictable results produced by the thick glaze and the low-temperature firing, which produced uneven effects of texture and colouring. Shino differed from Raku in its light palette and the use of simple stylized decorative motifs. He ...click for details
