The underglaze is a dark chocolate color. At the shoulder the glaze is lighter – almost a milk chocolate – that has five black rings encircling the top of the vase. Then – before straightening out to the vertical rim, the brown glaze goes back to the darker brown. ...click for details A Bronze Plated Okimono of a Seated Sage Catalogue: Vintage Arts: Regional Art: Asian: Japanese: Metalwork: Pre 1940   item# 979400 (stock# COLL1015)  click for details Ichiban Japanese and Oriental Antiques 203.272.7392 295.00  A very highly detailed okimono (figurine) of a seated sage executed in pot metal with bronze plating. Every detail of his robe - face - beard - front and back is very finely carved. The piece measures 2 1/2" wide by 2 1/2" high by 2" deep. It is in excellent condition with some small areas where the bronze plating has worn away over the years. We date it to the late Meiji to Taisho era, circa 1900-1925 - however it is quite possible from the patina that it is older than that. The base glaze is a light tan – almost white. Over that there is a large number of small silver splashes that look like snows flakes and are very reflective. The bowl has an evert top rim and is signed on the bottom. It has a lovely design with the tapered top done in a geometric medium blue color. As the base straightens out to a vertical body, we find a rounded body with a blue stream connecting reserves of the Three Friends of Summer. The back of the vase is primarily a plain white glaze. The dragon is traditionally associated with the Emperor and the Phoenix, or Ho-O bird, is associated with the Empress. Stylized clouds surround both symbols. In the center of the dish is a round reserve with a formal arrangement of three large leaves ans smaller vines. The interior of the piece has a mottled white glaze and there are areas of the mottle white on the exterior as well. The bottom is unglazed with the chocolate brown clay with dark spots in it. There is a signature – not translated. The piece measures 3 ½” high by 3 ¼” diameter at the top. We are not sure of the date so will be conservative and date it to the early to mid 20th century. The interior has the same light brown crackled glaze as the rim, The glazing stops about 1” above the base, which reveals the dark brown clay from which the bowl was made covered with a light clear glaze. The interior appears to have been made with the techniques known as salt glazing as is a soft greenish gray color. The outside appears to be ash glazed with the typical uneven colors caused by the placement of the piece in the kiln as the ash blows through the kiln.
