This is a sweet small Satsuma teapot that has a mark on the base that translates as “Kyomizu-yaki (ware). It is rare find Satsuma with such a mark as it differs quite a lot from the traditional Kyomizu-yaki pottery. The teapot has a design of a round basket filled with chrysanthemums – another mum is seen on the lid. The teapot measures 5” from the tip of the spout to the back of the handle – the body is 3 ¼” diameter and the piece is 2” high. This is a very nice example of 1920's - 30's Art deco enameled ceramics - a Satsuma blank bulb bowl - measuring 8 3/4" in diameter and 2 1/4" high.After World War I, pottery decorators in the United States could not find European pottery blanks to decorate and turned to Satsuma blanks from Japan. This fine example is beautiful with its sparse design of groups of art deco stylized flowers in the center of the bowl and at four points on the outside rim of the bowl. This is a late Taisho to Early Showa (1925-1940) Satsuma vase with a particularly lovely detailed landscape scene. On one side we find a group of court ladies strolling on the steps and at the base of a large temple with a pagoda and a waterfall in the background. A large Japanese Satsuma koro (incense burner) decorated on one side with a profusion of big spider mums with attending large green leaves - a single dragonfly hovers overhead. On the other side are two more colorful dragonflies near a leaf of the plant. The cover to the cover has no overglaze decoration – just three heart shaped holes from which the incense smoke can emerge and a seated shi shi with gilt paint – some of which has worn off. A Banko pottery wall pocket vase in the shape of a three quarter circle dating from the 1920—1950s. The wall pocket has a relief design of five flying cranes flying over a pine tree. The piece measures 7” high by 7 ¼” wide by 2” thick. It is in excellent condition with no chips or restorations.

A Satsuma double gourd flower vase with spare floral design of flowers in reds, yellows and blues with one small butterfly amongst the flowers. The item is signed and the signature has been translated as "Yasuda Zo (made)". The vase measures 9" high and is 2 5/8" diameter at its widest. Excellent condition with some tiny rim frits and two stable hairlines from the firing in the kiln.. We date it to the late Meiji period, circa 1890-1910.

A nicely decorated bowl from Kyoto area in the style of Ogata Kenzan and carrying a late variation copy of the Kenzan signature on one side. The bowl is decorated in bright overglaze enamels on all sides with stylized figures of five seated lohans (holy men) - there is also one in the center of the inside of the bowl. Unusual Japanese studio pottery vase in the art deco style bearing a mark which we believe to be that of the famed Kinkozan studio. It is possible this was one of the Satsuma blanks imported in the 1920's and 1930's for decoration by American pottery painters after their sources of blanks from Germany were depleted. A large Kutani charger in the Ko-Kutani palette depicting a group of sages in front of a waterfall. Minor losses to the overglaze enamel - on one man's headpiece, on part of one tree.
