This lovely Japanese lacquer tray is covered all over two thirds of the top with multiple flowers and leaves in gold makie lacquer on a nashiji (pear skin) ground. The bottom of the tray is a beautiful red-orange lacquer. It measures 14” diameter and the tray is 1” deep – with the tripod legs it is 4” high. There is, however, a problem. This is a handsome Japanese rimmed lacquer plate executed in Negoro lacquer. There are eight short lines radiating from the outer rim to the inner edge of the rim. The rim is scalloped into these eight segments. The inner bottom of the dish is all Negoro – black lacquer with a red lacquer top coating. Then parts of the red have worn away – or been deliberately rubbed away – to create the Negoro effect. The back of the plate is done in solid black roiro lacquer. A very handsome and utilitarian Japanese lacquer Jubako with five tiers, which can be stacked in groups of three, four or five tiers as the situation required. This set is shown with all five stacked and also the five tiers grouped into two sets of two tiers and three tiers. This is a two piece Japanese hair ornament set known as Kanzashi. In this case the set is made up of a hair pin – Kogai- and an elaborately decorated and inlaid comb, known as a Kogai. They are both made from wood that has been lacquered and they decorated with colorful lacquer and aogi (mother of pearl) insets. The Kogai hair stick measures 7 ¼” long and is ¾” by ½” at the ends. This is a nice simple Japanese lacquer pen and paper box from the 1930s -1950s, Showa period. The box is done in the dark black lacquer known as "roiro" and has two floral arrangements on the covering lid done in gold lacquer and some areas of nashiji(pear skin) gold. There is a plain black 1/4" thick piece that fits inside - probably to provide a lower section where paper would be stored and an upper section for the pens. We date the box to the mid Showa era. This is a very nicely carved Japanese lacquer box in the Kamakura-bori style. The design is that of a landscape in a central reserve that is surrounded by flowers on the lid and the sides. The interior is black roiro lacquer. The piece measures 5 3/8” long by 4 ¼” wide and is 1 7/8” deep. Excellent condition. We date this to the late Meiji to very early Showa period, circa 1910-1930.

A mid 20th century Showa period set of Mukozuke dishes in red lacquer with black lacquer designs in low relief. Each of the dishes has a different motif – different plant and floral designs – iris, thistles, etc. On the base of each there are moths or butterflies in the same black lacquer – with a different number and placement of these on each of the four plates. A Japanese red lacquer Kamakuri Bori plate with an impressed design of three stylized dragons in the center - a border of impressed flowers near the edge - and a Greek Key border at the rim. The underside is of plain black lacquer with a red lacquer rim. Measures 9 3/4" diameter and is 3/4" thick at the rim, Excellent condition with no cracks or chips. We date the piece to the Taisho to early Showa period - circa 1920s to 1940s - possibly even earlier.

A vintage Japanese Ryukyu lacquer circular box, black lacquer with gold pattern over on the cover. Lovely condition with no damage or repair, 4in diameter. We date this piece to the 1950s-60s. This style of Ryukyus (Okinawa)lacquer is known as Chinkin ware. Designs are carved with a Chinkin knife on the polished lacquer surface and lacquer is placed into the resulting grooves.
