The underglaze is a dark chocolate color. At the shoulder the glaze is lighter – almost a milk chocolate – that has five black rings encircling the top of the vase. Then – before straightening out to the vertical rim, the brown glaze goes back to the darker brown. ...click for details

A Small Dark Brown Guinomi – Sake Cup – Showa Catalogue: Vintage Arts: Regional Art: Asian: Japanese: Stoneware: Pre 1970   item# 975384 (stock# ICHI 721)  click for details Ichiban Japanese and Oriental Antiques 203.272.7392 125.00  This is an interesting small guinomi made with a dark brown glaze and in a twisted shape. The interior of the piece has a mottled white glaze and there are areas of the mottle white on the exterior as well. The bottom is unglazed with the chocolate brown clay with dark spots in it. There is a signature – not translated. The piece measures 3 ½” high by 3 ¼” diameter at the top. We are not sure of the date so will be conservative and date it to the early to mid 20th century.

It is wrapped in a raffia carrying “cage”. The vase measures 7” high and is 4” diameter at its widest. It is in excellent condition and dates from the mid Showa period, circa 1940s – 50s.

The base color is a crackled tan glaze – then around the sides there are area of soft green – chocolate brown and a light brown rim. The interior has the same light brown crackled glaze as the rim, The glazing stops about 1” above the base, which reveals the dark brown clay from which the bowl was made covered with a light clear glaze. The interior appears to have been made with the techniques known as salt glazing as is a soft greenish gray color. The outside appears to be ash glazed with the typical uneven colors caused by the placement of the piece in the kiln as the ash blows through the kiln. A Japanese Soft Turquoise Glazed Koro – Taisho/Showa Catalogue: Vintage Arts: Regional Art: Asian: Japanese: Stoneware: Pre 1980   item# 972335 (stock# ICHI 1211)  click for details Ichiban Japanese and Oriental Antiques 203.272.7392 150.00  A very pretty small soft turquoise celadon koro (incense burner) with three flame like handles on the sides. It sits on tripod legs – the top has ten small almost heart shaped holes for the incense smoke to emerge. The piece measures 3 ¾” diameter and is 4” high to the top of the flame-like handles. It is early to mid Taisho/Showa period. It is in excellent condition.

A Studio Tea Bowl (Chawan) – Signed – Showa Catalogue: Vintage Arts: Regional Art: Asian: Japanese: Stoneware: Pre 1980   item# 965026 (stock# ICHI 1884)  click for details Ichiban Japanese and Oriental Antiques 203.272.7392 495.00  This is a fine Japanese chawan – tea bowl – with a very simple but lovely grayish blue crackle glaze. On one side there are two horizontal stripes in underglaze iron rust color. The chawan measures 4 12” diameter at the mouth and is 2 3/8 diameter at the foot and stands 2 ½” high. There is an impressed raised signature on the inner side of the raised foot which is either SH or HS depending on which way one holds the piece. The bowl is glazed in a rough and grainy white glaze and the top of the bowl is carved with regular ripples. It has an evert rim. The sides of the bowl shade down from top to bottom – first the grainy white glaze – then a band of medium grey glaze – and then a bottom band of the natural brown/tan clay. ...click for details

It is made of a grayish white pottery with a white glaze and the features of the face are well defined. The glaze has a grainy texture to it and it has either worn off in a couple of small areas - such as his left eyebrow; or it did no adhere all that well in the firing. A Kyo Yaki Chawan w/ Colorful Irises – Meiji - Showa Catalogue: Vintage Arts: Regional Art: Asian: Japanese: Stoneware: Pre 1960   item# 955024 (stock# COLL 9097)  click for details Ichiban Japanese and Oriental Antiques 203.272.7392 395.00  This is a handsome Kyo-Yaki chawan – tea bowl – that is covered in a thick enamel design of irises. The irises are dark purple and white on golden enamel crackle glazed ground and are further highlighted with bright emerald green leaves. The piece measures 4 ¾” diameter at the top and is 3 5/8” high and is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. There is an incised mark on the base that translates as “Kutani Toho”.
