A boldly painted pottery dish in the classic Eiraku style - 9" in diameter. Signed on the bottom - "Oomiya Fujioka Zo kore"
"This was made bu Fujioka Oomiya". Dates from mid to late Meiji. Excellent condition.
A fine mid 19th century Imari plate with a design of a kylin - the mythical unicorn like
gentle animal of Japanese folklore - in underglaze blue at the center of the plate. The plate is 6 1/4" diameter and is 1 1/4" deep.
A fine early pair of Japanese folk art (Mingei) wooden dishes such as would be used in the tea
ceremony. Both are made from cross sections of very old trees as evidenced by the scores of tiny
growth tree rings. Deeply etched landscape scenes and calligraphy highlighted with sumi ink. The
largest is 3 1/2" in diameter at the widest and the smaller one is the same width at widest but 1/2"
inches narrower in the other direction. Believed to be mid-Meiji or earlier from the fine patina.
Wonderfully rustic copper tea kettle totally handmade with superb repousse hammered design. It looks rustic until you examine the piece closely and see the extremely fine hammering that was require to shape the pot and the design. The interior appears to be lined with tin or some other white metal. Double bale handles that swing away. Very good condition with fine old patina. Four character signature on base...
A wonderful late Edo Period Seto ware Mingei dish in the classic "Horse's Eye" pattern - shown in all the books on Japanese pottery, ca. 1800. This beauty measures 10 1/4" in diameter and is 2 1/4" deep. As is usually the case, there is a nick on the rim - see photo - but that does not detract from the simple beauty of the design. Multiple spur marks on the inside of the bowl indicate the dish was glazed and then placed in the kiln upside down to fire it...

A very fine Gandharan head of the BUDDHA done in stucco- 6" tall x 4" wide x 5' deep (Not including the custom stand). Heavy encrustation on the back, apparently from where the piece was pried off the stupa on which it was located. This fine example of Gandharan art was obtained from one of the top antiquities dealers on the East Coast. As such, I fully believe in the authenticity of the 4th century dating...

Beautiful and simple Edo period Satsuma sake pouring cup with wooden lid. Decorated in the sparse mid-Edo period style that marks early Satsuma before the more highly decorated style was adopted to appeal to the Western market. Very fine crackle glaze with five kiku mons (the 16 petal imperial chrysthemum) as the only decoration - five in underglaze brown and two in the rare gosu blue. Not signed - as most Edo Satsuma pieces were not signed by the artist...

A truly beautiful Awata Satsuma sake pourer with spectacular decoration of four figures in thickly applied overglaze primary colors - very lovely combination of colors on the fine crackle Satsuma ground - yellow, green, blues, reds. Signed on the side with three character signature. Measures 5 1/4" tall and is 3 1/2" diameter at the widest. Small early repair to the lip - otherwise excellent condition. I date this one to late Edo to early Meiji. One of the best in our collection.
A really different Japanese Satsuma pouring pitcher - possibly a sake pitcher...
