This is a fine Japanese lacquer stand with a red top and sides and a black roiro lacquer bottom. The stand has a small vertical lip surrounding the top - the rim measures 1/2" high. It stands on two nicely curved legs - that makes the entire stand 2 1/2"tall. There is a minute separation where the inner bottom was adhered to the legs - mostly a very slight separation of the lacquer in these creases. We date the stand to the late Meiji toTaisho periods, circa 1900-1925...
Here we have two red lacquer sake bowls with makie designs of the Tokugawa mon in the center. One has the mon in gold makie while the other has it done in silver lacquer. Both bowls measure 4” diameter by 1 ½” deep. Each as a series of Kanji characters on the outer rims and there is a gold mark on the base - - none of these have been translated. They are in excellent condition. We date them to the late Meiji to Taisho period, circa 1900-1925.

This handsome smell red lacquer teapot is covered on all sides and the inside with red lacquer and no designs. The only area that is not red lacquer is the bottom which is roiro black lacquer. At first we thought it might be a modern plastic piece – but, then, when we examined it more carefully with a ten power loupe – we could see the grain of the underlying wood on the bottom of the pot...

This fine tray would be a wonderful accompaniment for serving sake or tea. It is made of woven strips of either rattan or strips of bamboo - we can never tell the difference. It was then lacquered with several coats of a reddish maroon lacquer on all side - top, edges and bottom.
The tray measures 13" by 9 3/8” and is ¾” deep with vertical sides. It is in very fine condition. There is one nick on the top and one on the edge of the bottom – both shown in the close up photos...

This is an unusual set – we have had many natsume in our collection over the years, but never one with a matching high rimmed holder or saucer like base as does this one. Both pieces are executed using the negoro-ware lacquer technique. Negoro lacquerwares were produced at the Negoro-ji temple complex in Izumi province. The red layers of lacquer on Negoro wares are intended to gradually wear away with use, revealing the black lacquer underneath...

This lovely Japanese lacquer tray is covered all over two thirds of the top with multiple flowers and leaves in gold makie lacquer on a nashiji (pear skin) ground. The bottom of the tray is a beautiful red-orange lacquer. It measures 14” diameter and the tray is 1” deep – with the tripod legs it is 4” high. There is, however, a problem. At some time, two of the legs of the tripod were broken off in parts. Only one of the three legs is still intact. We have all the parts that were broken ...
