An unusual japanese Wooden Brush Rest, late 19th century, Meiji period. Carved to portray a peasant, or farmer, who is seated with either his inverted straw hat on his lap or possibly a large wooden bowl. He sits beside a pyramid shaped object or maybe a pile of something, it is not clear. Length 2 1/8 ins. (5.5 cms). The dark wood in close grained but quite light. It is in excellent condition with no damage and no repairs...

Blowfish Suiteki - late Edo to early Meiji.
Small, fish-shaped suiteki or water dropper is hand made and rough in design - we think the fish is a blowfish. The suiteki were used to dampen the ink cake used by scholars in preparing the ink for calligraphic work. It appears to be some type of early studio pottery and measures 3" long, 2" high and 1.75" wide...

Japanese bronze double gourd Suiteki - a waterdropper used in dampening the sold inkstone used by scholars when doing calligraphy...
Beautiful small Japanese pottery suiteki (water dropper used to moisten the solid ink for doing calligraphy). Shaped as a miniature teapot, this lovely piece has a great dark chocolate brown glaze with splashes of blue/white glaze as highlights - woven twig handle. This beauty measures 2 1/2" tall to the top of the finial and is 2 3/4" diameter at the waist - old museum marks on the unglazed bottom and on the inside of the lid...
