Green Melon Striped Studio Pot -Chozo Kozan
Green Melon Striped Studio Pot - believed to be by the father of Makuzon Kozan, Chozo Kozan. Chozo Kozan founded the famous Kozan pottery kiln in 1851 in the Makuzugahara section of Kyoto to produce wares for the imperial court. Members of the imperial family bestowed upon Chozo two names that his son would take to Yokohama and make known throughout the world. "Makuzo-yaki" was the official name given to Chozo' wares by Prince Yasui-no-miya and "Kozan" (incense mountain) was the art name given to him by Prince Kacho-no-miya. This superb vase bears an impressed seal on the base which we believe to be that of Chozo Kozan. The vase would date from sometime 1855 and 1890. It measures 6" tall and is 5 1 /8" diameter at the shoulder, 1 ½" diameter at the top and 2" diameter at the base. A lovely dark apple green color interspersed with vertical lines gives the vase a very strong and dynamic appearance. Excellent condition with no chips, nicks or hairlines.
