This is a group of four Japanese Hirado porcelain chopstick rests. The first is a Hirado rest in the shape of two ancient Japanese coins. The characters on the piece have been translated as "Wadokaiho"- a coin design which was a very famous coin as it was the first Japanese coin, in 708AD (1st Wado year) – in the center is 10 ryo Koban symbol. This chopstick rest measures 2 ½” long by 1 3/8” wide. It is in excellent condition and dates from the Meiji period, circa 1880s-90s. The next two are a pair of white double gourd rests with a low relief of a blue string around their middles. These measure 2 ¼” long by 5/8” wide by 5/8” deep. They are both in excellent condition and date from the Meiji period, circa 1880s-90s. The fourth chopstick rest is in the shape of a Japanese radish by the name of Sakurajima daikon. It has dark green leaves at the top and the usual soft Hirado white glaze for the radish itself. The radish rest measures 2 5/8” long by 1 3/8’ wide by ½” thick. It is in generally good condition – there is a small chip on the right side of one of the leaves. Here again we date it to the Meiji period. These four would make a great set to go along with the other pair of Hirado chopstick rests on our site – item number 1022278. |
