This is a nice little Persian box made of paper-mâché with a black lacquer coating. The exterior top has then been painted with a lovely scene of four deer in light golden yellow paint on a bright green base color. The four sides are also painted with the same colors and each of the sides has a deer on it. We are guessing that the animals represent deer as three of them have antlers and the other five do not. They are surrounded with green grasses and tall evergreens. The box is rectangular in form with notched corners. The inside of the box and the bottom are solid black. On the base there is some writing in Persian or some other middle East language which we are unable to translate. The box measures 3 ¼” long by 2 ¾” wide and is 1 ½” deep. It is in excellent condition. We date it to sometime between the late 19th to mid 20th centuries. Just a guess as it could possibly be earlier. Papier-mâché (French for 'chewed-up paper', due to its appearance), commonly called paper-mâché, is a construction material that consists of pieces of paper, sometimes reinforced with textiles, stuck together using a wet paste (e.g., glue, starch, or wallpaper adhesive). The crafted object becomes solid when the paste dries. |
