| A very early blue and white covered jar decorated in underglaze cobalt blue in the classic "Three Friends of Winter" motif. The three friends are the bamboo - the pine - and the plum blossom tree - and this motif appears in Korean, Chinese and Japanese art going back many centuries. This fascinating covered jar has us totally puzzled as to exact age - and even as to origin as it is just possible that it is Korean or Chinese blue and white and not Japanese. The glaze bubbles and the dark pooling of the cobalt blue decoration both are indicative of an early dating - we believe the piece is no later than early 19th century and could well be 18th century. Measures 5" diameter x 4" tall. Condition is excellent with no chips or cracks, A really gorgeous early piece. | |||||||||||||||
