A Japanese Pottery Furidashi - Late Meiji
This is a handsome early dark brown pottery Furidashi. A Furidashi is a small container used of holding small sweets for the tea ceremony. These pieces are not often found. We believe the glaze to be either Shigaraki or Seto ware. This piece also has a characteristic called “ishihaze – this is when small or a little larger than small stones that are in the clay expand during the firing and protrude through the surface of the ware.

The furidashi has a wonderful “funky” look to it as the top is lopsided. Whether this was a firing flaw or done by design is not known – but it surely gives the jar great character. The thick flared lip opening is sealed with a woven bamboo “cork” - a rarely seen closure. The glaze is a dark brown with overtones of grey and green. It measures 4 1/3” high and is 2 ¾” diameter. It is in excellent condition. We date it to the late Meiji period, circa 1885-1910.
