| A most unusual 19th Century Chinese miniature Jue executed in a soft celadon glazed porcelain and modelled in archaistic style. Size - 2.5 iches high.Condition - one tiny nick to 1 foot. There are molded relief Chinese characters on the sides, but we are not able to translate them. The JUE form originated in the Shang dynasty - 1766-1050 BC. The JUE is named after its shape - a sparrow (or que in Chinese). The ancient Chinese character JUE had the same pronunciation as QUE and these two names were used interchangeably. It has a spout at the front like a beak, a tail at the back, and slender legs below the belly. Most JUE have two small pillars and three legs (as does this one); a few have one pillar or none. (JUE information taken from "The Wonders of Chinese Bronzes" by Li Xueqin.) We have seen JUE in bronze, iron, blanc de chine and even ivory (one of which we list on these pages). However, this is the first we have seen in this unusual color - a rare and lovely piece indeed. We date it from sometime in the mid 19th to late 19th century. | |||||||
