| Interesting and fine Chinese miniature pottery ruyi scepter. Measures 6 3/4" in length, 2" wide and 1 1/4" deep. Excellent condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. Probably dates from the late 19th century but could even be early twentieth century. There is a Qianlong impressed mark on the back, however we feel sure it is an honorific mark and that the piece is not of the period. We particularly like the faux lapiz look to the center "stone" on the top of the piece made of pottery - and the two archaic dragons that flank the "lapiz stone". These scepters - also known as Ju-i (a word meaning "what you will") are considered as bringers of good luck, especially when presented to a senior friend or relative on an important occasion. The shape is believed to have been adopted in the Song Dynasty, however no examples have been dated earlier than the late Ming period. The remote ancestor of the ruyi appears to have been a wand held by Buddhist priests when discoursing. | |||||||||||
