| A stunning Kakiemon porcelain sake bottle (tokkuri) in rounded form decorated in brilliant overglaze enamels in the design known as "The Three Friends of Winter" -or shochikubai (pine, plum and bamboo) design. On the base is the mark "Fuku"- in calligraphic style (also called "Uzu Fuku" Swirl Fuku in this style) painted inside a double ring in underglaze cobalt blue on the base. We date this from the late Meiji to very early Showa period, circa 1900-1930. The elegant Three Friends decoration on the exterior features a large knurled pine tree, behind which are the branches and blossoms of a plum tree. The trees emerge from a rocky outcropping on either side of which are plum blossoms and stalks of bamboo.A bird is perched on one bamboo stalk and another flies overhead. On the shoulder of the bottle we find a scattering of plum blossoms. Kakiemon is considered to be one of the finest of Japanese porcelains - always highly refined, with brilliant and clear colors on a pure white body. Condition is excellent with no cracks, chips or restorations. There are a couple of small vertical firing faults - see the photos for extreme closeups of these. The tokkuri measures 8 1/4" high x 4 1/8" diameter and the rounded lip of the bottle is 1 5/8" in diameter. | |||||||||||||||
