| Another wonderful 1960 woodblock print "Recollection" by Kiyoshi Saito (1907-1992). Print 18 of 100 - an arresting image of a woman, rich in color and texture - nicely composed. Saito did a short series of prints in 1960 while studying and visiting in Paris - this is one of the series - probably a portrait of a shop girl. The picture has a yin/yang quality to it the way the portrait is divided into two halves - light and dark - the right side has the same dark brown/black/maroon colors as were found in his print of three nuns. The print has the much sought artist's label on backer paper stating that the print was self carved and self printed by Saito. Saito's work is highly sought after by collectors. The print has some toning on the edges where it has mat burn - it was not viewable at all when it was in the frame. As you can see from the photo of the back, there are tape marks on the upper edge - they do not show through on the front. The print image area is 21" X 15 1/4"; the paper is 23 1/2" x 17 1/2"". In the left blank area there appears to be either a design element of faint tan streaks as if on the wall - however, it is possible that this is bleed through from a earlier framing. When the print was unframed, there was tissue paper behind the print - it showed no sign of the tan streaks - so I am not certain what they are. Whatever, they work out very well in the overall design. Saito continued to do traditional woodblock printmaking well into his eighties. | |||||||||
