| A very fine and quite rare Hirado standing figure of a tree trunk with a white dove perched at the top. We think that the tree is a plum tree as the white blossoms closely resemble the prunus flowers commonly found in Japanese depictions of the "three friends of winter" - plum, pine and bamboo. One of the blossoms has full opened and the others are in various stages of budding and opening. Amazingly, only two of the tiny buds has been broken off - the normal fate of Hirado figurines with raised flowers and leaves - one is located right at the top to the right and back of the bird's perch and the other is at the middle on the right side. Even then, they look like small buds and had to be felt to be noticed as missing. This lovely piece dates from the mid Meiji period and measures 5" high x 3 1/2" wide at the base and 2" deep at the base. The top measure 1 1/8" x just under 1". It is possible that the piece was designed as a brush pot for small brushes - or it might have served decorative purposes only. A truly fine and unusual example of Hirado ware in the rarely found brown glaze over the soft Hirado white clay. | |||||||||||||||
