| A very nice Meiji Period carved wood figure of the seated Buddha with his hands in the Gesture of Prayer (Namaskara Mudra). Dating from the late 1880’s this fine carving was originally covered in gesso and then lacquered and gilded – much of the lacquer and some gilding has long since worn away. The face has a wonderfully tranquil expression to it and the robes are nicely defined and carved. The piece is made of of four separate blocks of wood that were then glued together before the gesso and lacquer covering was applied. The figure measures 4” high x 3 ¾” wide x 2 5/8” deep and is in overall very good condition. We confidently date this piece to the 1880s because of an accompanying plaque that was packed with it as a funeral memorial. The plaque has been destroyed by a Buddhist priest in accordance with Buddhist tradition for such items. | ||||||||||
