Bizen Figure of the Bodhisattva Kannon - Meiji
A lovely Bizen saikumono (carved figure) of the Japanese Goddess of Mercy, Kannon. Kannon stands with her arms folded under her robes and holding a scroll as she looks down with a contemplative and serene expression. The figure dates from the late Meiji period and stands 9 7/8" high by 3 1/4" wide and 3" deep. Excellent condition with some very small chipping to the toes on both feet. There is a two character impressed mark on the lower back portion of the robe.Bizen ware is well-known as one of the 6 ancient kilns in Japan with over a thousand years of history. It is characterized by the medium brown glaze and the light tan spots which form in the firing.
