A Japanese Wooden Brush Rest for the Scholar - Meiji
An unusual japanese Wooden Brush Rest, late 19th century, Meiji period. Carved to portray a peasant, or farmer, who is seated with either his inverted straw hat on his lap or possibly a large wooden bowl. He sits beside a pyramid shaped object or maybe a pile of something, it is not clear. Length 2 1/8 ins. (5.5 cms). The dark wood in close grained but quite light. It is in excellent condition with no damage and no repairs. This piece would have been used to prop up the scholars or artists brush whilst engaged in calligraphy or sumi ink painting.
