| A fine Japanese cloisonne musen shippo (wireless cloisonne) vase dating from the mid to late Meiji Period, circa 1880-1910, the Golden Age of Japanese cloisonne. This lovely vase has a soft pink ground against which is a design of irises and their leaves - one white iris is already in full bloom and the purple iris is just beginning to open. The vase measures 5 1/4" high and is 2 7/8" diameter at the shoulder, 1 3/4" diameter at the foot. The vase is in excellent condition, with one very tiny firing flaw in the pink ground on the rear shoulder area. It is not signed. It is done in the technique known as wireless cloisonne - in Japanese 'musen jippo' or 'musen shippo'. The technique was perfected in 1889 by the Tsukamoto family within the workshop of Namikaya Sosuke. It has been described as a technique wherein the wires outlining the design are removed before firing or are hidden by the enamel in order to achieve an illusion of painting on porcelain. It has become increasingly difficult to find examples of fine wireless cloisonne on todays market. | |||||||||||
