| A handsome little tea jar decorated with a traditional Samurai wave pattern design in handpainted slip trailing decoration, under the glaze. Alternatively, the design could be a highly stylized interpretation of the traditional "floating wheel" design that dates back to the 12th century. That motif derives from the early practice of soaking the wheels for bullock carts in the Kamo River in Kyoto; wheels thus treated were stronger and held their shape longer. The design went out of fashion after the Heian period and was not seen again until the second half of the 19th century.This ware is often mistaken for moriage, though it is older and more traditional Mingei. The Jar measures 4 & 1/4 inches high x 3 1/2" diameter at the shoulder - and 1 3/4" diameter at the base. The lid is repaired, the jar itself is in excellent, undamaged condition. Probably dates from the mid to late Meiji Period. | |||||||||
