| Fascinating wooden carving of a Japanese Buddhist monk or priest standing on a lotus base on top of a gilded cylindrical base. The monk has a superbly expressive face - both wise and tranquil. The hands and the toes are missing but the power of the piece remains. The figure stands 6 1/4" high , without the mandala, with the separate mandala it is 7" tall. The mandala is a separate pieces that fits into a slot on the base. The base itself is 5 3/4" tall - so the total piece measures 12 3/4". There is minimal wear to the gilded base - the priest's robes have some light rubbed spots on the black robes at the shoulder. Overall excellent condition despite the loss of the hands and toes. Probably was originally part of a household shrine, or zushi, based on the flat back of the piece. I date this one from the late Meiji to Taisho period, circa 1900-1920's. | |||||||||
