| A lovely moss agate snuff bottle in a rounded flatted shape on a flat oval base. Measures 2 1/6" high exclusive of the stooper and is 2" wide by 1" thick. The stopper must have had a stone at one time, however it is long gone and only the remains of a cork base and silver collar are attached to the ivory spoon. Probably not the original stopper as the spoon is short relative to the bottle's height. The bottle is extremely well hollowed and in excellent condition with no chips or problems. We date this bottle from the late 19th to early 20th century. Moss agate is a transparent chalcedony agate with green strands in it. The green strands inside moss agate are NOT moss, although they looks very convincing. They are called dendrites (from "dendron" (Greek) a tree), and they are chlorite or manganese oxide. These dendrite occlusions are or red, green and brown coloration due to iron or other minerals present in the stone. | ||||||||||
