An Unusually Small Shaped Pedestal Cup/Vase – Mid Qing
Unusual footed pedestal cup decorated in a rich cobalt underglaze blue and white. The design is that of peony vines that was popular during the fifteenth century accented by some surface crackling lines that may be from age or from the firing. The foot and most of the pedestal is solid white and the base and interior are unglazed It is a thickly potted piece that measures 3 1/4" diameter at the widest by 2 5/8" high - the foot is 1 3/4" diameter. We have searched our reference books far and wide for a comparable example and have not been able to find another such piece. Most of the stem cups we find have a flared bowl – whereas this beauty has the invert top creating a flattened globular shape the the top. Clearly it could not have been a cup for drinking – perhaps a small bud or incense container ? We have no real idea as to its dating – the deep blue of the cobalt leads us to believe it dates to the 17th to early 18th century – however, it could as easily be a 19th century item. At any rate, the simple beauty of its form and color speaks for itself.
