| A rare dendrifical chalcedony snuff bottle – also known as “macaroni agate” or “macaroni quartz”. That unusual material is characterized by the unusual "tubes" caught in the milky agate material. It almost looks like lichen was petrified in the agate. The bottle is in the rounded oval shape – slightly flattened – and stands on a well defined raised oval foot. This exceptional snuff stands 2 5/8" tall by 1 3/4" at the waist by 1" thick. It is topped with a snowflake obsidian lid accented with turquoise; an ivory spoon is attached. It is probably a replacement lid, but makes an attractive addition to this bottle. This beautifully rare snuff is in exceptional condition with no scratches, only a very tiny frit under the foot and is extremely well hollowed. We date this bottle from the late Qing Dynasty – circa 1850-1920. Very few examples are found in the auction catalogs of snuff bottles- when found they usually command prices in the range of $800 - $1,500. | ||||||||||||||
