A 19th Century Red Overlay Snuff Bottle – Dragons
An excellent single overlay snuff bottle in elongated flattened oval form. A red overlay atop a snowflake ground and set on a well defined raised oval foot. Carved through the red overlay are two well defined and crisp dragons that curl around the two sides – one over the other – and both chasing the sacred pearl. A soft celadon colored stopper with an ivory spoon – probably not the original The bottle measures just under 2 5/8" tall exclusive of the stopper and is 1 5/8" wide at its widest by 5/8" thick. Excellent condition – there is one minuscule chip to the end of the uppermost dragon’s tail – had to look long and hard with a loupe to find it. Dates from the mid to late 19th century. A wonderfully detailed design and quite deeply carved with sharp edges throughout.
