A charming Hirado water dropper (Suiteki) in the classic Akita puppy form. These are used on the scholars table to drop tiny drops of water on the solid ink used in calligraphy and sumi ink drawings. The piece is in mint condition - just a bit of roughness on the base - but still a classic mid Meiji water dropper - it has been in our collection for about 12 years. It measures 2 5/8" tall and is 2 3/4" long by 2" wide – an unusually large size for these Hirado suiteki. We date the suiteki from the mid to late Meiji period, circa 1890-1910. Louis Lawrence, in his book "Hirado, Prince of Porcelain", accurately summed up why this Japanese porcelain is widely regarded as the finest to ever come out of Japan -it is a true world class ceramic made of the finest clay from Amakusa Island. Hirado is characterized by the extreme smoothness of the clay and its ability to adapt to very unusual shapes because of its malleability and resistance to running in the firing process.
