An Edo Period Wooden Plaque of Buddha on Clouds
A very striking wooden relief carving of Buddha standing on a bank of clouds. The carving was then mounted on a wooden plaque with gilt on the front. The Buddha shows signs of gesso and earlier coloring that include red and gold. The plaque - including the background mounting - measures 13 1/4" high by 5" wide by 5/8" thick. Excellent patina and condition - one curl of the clouds to the right side of the figure has had a break and been reglued - not noticeable. We date the piece to the mid to late Edo period - 1789-1850s.
